Border height and purpose
Choose the construction method for the job it must perform
The appropriate system depends on height, soil pressure, drainage, material, curves and the surface on each side. Treating every border as decorative edging can lead to movement, uneven courses or trapped water.
Raised garden borders
Adds visible height and contains planting soil, mulch, gravel or a slightly elevated landscape bed.
Garden and retaining walls
Retains soil or manages grade using a prepared base, aligned courses, suitable backfill and drainage where required.
Structural note: Taller retaining walls may require engineering, permits or additional construction requirements depending on height, load and site conditions.

The foundation changes with the border
A flexible lawn edge does not require the same construction as a two-course stone border or a wall holding back soil. Base material, anchoring, backfill and drainage are selected according to the material, height, load and purpose.

What is the difference between edging and a retaining wall?
Edging separates surface materials with little soil pressure. A retaining wall supports soil across an elevation change and requires a more substantial base, backfill and drainage approach.
Can stone borders contain raised flower beds?
Yes, when the material, number of courses, base and support are appropriate for the bed height and soil being contained.
Does a garden wall need drainage?
Walls retaining soil may require drainage aggregate, water relief and controlled backfill. The need depends on wall height, soil, runoff and site conditions.
Can borders be installed with new sod and planting?
Yes. Combining the work helps coordinate bed height, lawn elevation, irrigation and drainage before final materials are installed.
Which material works best for curved beds?
Flexible edging, selected natural stone, manufactured units or custom concrete may be considered. Curve radius, desired height and surrounding architecture guide the choice.
