The Drainage Route
Four conditions must work together.
Diagnose Before Excavation
Standing water is the symptom. The failed route is the problem.
Installing a drain at the visible puddle does not automatically solve the property. Effective construction begins by confirming contributing runoff, elevations, soil saturation, pipe routing, utility conflicts, and the final outlet.
Pooling Beside the House
Water remains against the foundation, patio, or narrow side yard after rainfall.
Soft Soil and Damaged Sod
Persistent moisture produces mud, thinning grass, difficult access, or repeated lawn failure.
Overloaded Downspout Areas
Concentrated roof water releases near the foundation or overwhelms planting beds.
Patio or Driveway Runoff
Sheet flow crosses paving, enters structures, erodes joints, or collects at transitions.
Recurring Low Areas
Settlement, poor finish grading, or restricted outlets prevent positive surface flow.
Drainage Systems by Function
Different water conditions require different collection methods.
A French drain, catch basin, channel drain, and downspout connection are not interchangeable. One project may combine several components along a single coordinated route.
Catch Basins and Area Drains
Installed at defined low points to intercept surface runoff before it spreads across the lawn, foundation zone, or patio edge.
French Drain Systems
Perforated pipe and drainage aggregate manage saturated soil where subsurface moisture, not surface runoff alone, is the primary condition.
Downspout Connections
Direct concentrated roof runoff into a dedicated underground route instead of releasing it beside the house or into a narrow side yard.
Channel Drains
Intercept sheet flow along patios, driveways, gates, pool decks, garage entries, and other hardscape thresholds.
Solid PVC Routes and Sump Pumps
Solid pipe carries captured water to the outlet. When the collection area is lower than the available discharge, a sump basin and pump may be required.
Drainage Installation Process
Protect the route from excavation through restoration.
The approved scope depends on site elevations, access, utilities, existing irrigation, hardscape crossings, tree roots, pipe depth, discharge method, and the amount of surface restoration required.
Evaluate Grade, Flow, and Discharge
Review water sources, pooling areas, foundation clearance, route length, available fall, outlet conditions, construction access, and affected improvements.
Lay Out Collection Points and Pipe Route
Mark basins, channel drains, French drain zones, downspout connections, fittings, cleanouts when specified, and the final discharge location.
Excavate to the Required Depth
Open the trench while coordinating utilities, roots, irrigation components, hardscape edges, trench stability, pipe cover, and working access.
Install and Connect the System
Set collection components, establish pipe alignment and slope, assemble solid or perforated pipe, add specified aggregate and fabric, and connect the outlet or pump assembly.
Verify Flow and Complete Backfill
Check the installed route, protect pipe position, place suitable backfill, compact in a manner appropriate for the surface, and maintain required finish elevations.
Restore the Disturbed Work Area
Finish-grade disturbed surfaces, reinstall sod or specified material, reset affected landscape components when included, remove construction debris, and review system operation.
Discharge Method
Can gravity reach the outlet?
The lowest collection elevation, required pipe cover, route length, obstacles, and final outlet determine whether water can move without mechanical lift.
Gravity Discharge
Used when sufficient elevation difference exists between collection points and the approved outlet. The route still requires coordinated pipe depth and slope.
Pumped Discharge
Used when the collection zone sits below the available outlet. A basin, pump, check valve, electrical requirements, service access, and discharge line must be coordinated.
Coordinated Site Construction
Drainage may require more than underground pipe.
Surface elevations, lawn restoration, hardscape edges, and complete outdoor construction may need to be coordinated with the drainage route.

Correct settled areas, low spots, irregular surfaces, and finish elevations that restrict positive surface flow.

What homeowners should understand before installation.
The correct system is determined by the water condition and the complete route from collection to discharge.
Do I need a French drain or catch basins?
Catch basins collect surface runoff at low points. French drains manage water held within saturated soil. Some properties require both, but the two systems perform different functions.
Can grading solve the problem without underground drainage?
Sometimes. Surface grading may restore positive flow when sufficient elevation and a viable outlet exist. Underground drainage is considered when surface movement is restricted, runoff is concentrated, or subsurface saturation remains.
Where will the collected water discharge?
The outlet depends on property elevation, route length, existing infrastructure, local conditions, and available lawful discharge options. It must be identified before the system is finalized.
Will the lawn be restored after trenching?
The proposal should define the restoration included. Work may involve backfill, finish grading, sod replacement, gravel restoration, border resetting, irrigation adjustments, and debris removal.
Can a drainage system prevent every instance of standing water?
No drainage system should be represented as eliminating every condition during extreme rainfall. Performance depends on rainfall intensity, soil saturation, inlet capacity, pipe capacity, pump operation when applicable, outlet conditions, and continued maintenance.
