Why loose stones keep moving
The walking surface is only as reliable as the support below it
Large pavers placed directly on soft soil can rock, settle or create uneven steps. Gravel installed without excavation or edge restraint can mix with the soil and spread into the lawn. A professional walkway addresses subgrade condition, construction depth, compacted base, spacing, edge control and how rainwater will move across or beside the path.

The applicable layers depend on soil, access, drainage, material selection and intended use. Each part should support the next.
Excavation and subgrade
Remove the required depth and address unsuitable surface material before placing the supporting construction layers.
DG or aggregate base
Install and compact the selected supporting material in the prepared area. Base type and depth depend on the site and walkway design.
Large-format pavers
Set concrete, porcelain or natural-stone units according to material requirements, layout, spacing and finished elevation.
Decorative gravel
Fill the defined field with an appropriate decorative stone selected for appearance, particle stability and walking comfort.
Edging and drainage
Control the path perimeter and coordinate surface flow, collection or conveyance where water conditions require additional work.
DG has more than one possible role
Supporting base or visible finish
Decomposed granite can be compacted as a finished walking surface in some designs or used within a supporting assembly when appropriate. Decorative gravel is generally selected for its visible color and texture. The materials should not be treated as interchangeable without considering stability, drainage and maintenance.
Comfort matters
Step spacing should feel natural
Large units provide a generous landing surface, but their center-to-center spacing should follow a comfortable walking rhythm. The path width and alignment should also account for children, adults carrying items, pet movement and access to gates or equipment.
Drainage note: Gravel and open joints do not automatically solve standing water. Soil, slope, runoff volume and an achievable outlet still matter.

Is decomposed granite the same as decorative gravel?
No. DG contains fine particles and can compact, while decorative gravel is generally selected for a visible loose-stone finish. The project may use one or both depending on the construction design.
Can large pavers be placed directly on soil?
Direct placement may allow rocking and settlement. The applicable support depends on paver material, soil, traffic and manufacturer requirements, but professional preparation normally includes excavation and a stable base.
How is comfortable step spacing determined?
The paver size, direction and typical stride are reviewed during layout. Units should provide a natural rhythm without forcing unusually short or long steps.
Does a gravel walkway need edging?
Defined edges help contain loose material and create cleaner transitions. The edge type depends on the design, adjacent surfaces and required restraint.
Can drainage be installed with the walkway?
Yes, when site conditions require it. Drainage should be installed before the base and finish so collection points, pipe routes and elevations can be coordinated.
