Excavate and shape
Remove unsuitable surface material and establish the elevations required for drainage and the finished walkway.
Turn a muddy passage beside the house into clean, dependable access.
A narrow side yard can receive roof runoff, air-conditioning discharge and water from adjoining elevations while getting too little sun for grass to recover. The result is often mud at the gate, exposed soil beside the foundation and an awkward route between the driveway and backyard. PLS Landscaping evaluates the complete corridor before construction: width, slope, utilities, downspouts, irrigation, gate clearance and the available discharge point. We then coordinate the applicable drainage system with excavation, a stable base, gravel containment and accurately set stepping pavers so the finished walkway manages water and supports everyday foot traffic.
★★★★★READ GOOGLE REVIEWSWhy side yards become problem areas
A walkway cannot be planned only from the top surface. Its height affects foundation clearance, gate operation, drainage inlets and the way water crosses or moves beneath the route. Placing loose gravel over mud or setting pavers directly on soil may provide a temporary visual change, but it does not establish a dependable construction base or controlled discharge.
Concentrated roof water saturates soil in a corridor with little sun and limited surface fall.
Repeated foot traffic breaks down wet soil and carries mud toward the driveway, patio and home.
Material installed without excavation, base preparation and edge restraint migrates into soil and adjacent beds.
Units set on unstable soil can shift, rock or settle as moisture conditions change beneath them.
Build from the bottom up
Drainage and walkway components are selected around the actual property, but the construction logic remains consistent.
Remove unsuitable surface material and establish the elevations required for drainage and the finished walkway.
Place applicable catch basins, solid pipe, downspout connections or subsurface drainage before closing the area.
Install and compact the selected aggregate layers to support the pavers and stabilize the walking corridor.
Level individual units, contain decorative aggregate and complete transitions at gates, patios and lawns.
Catch basins collect water at verified low points, while solid pipe and underground gutter extensions convey runoff toward the selected outlet.
Square or rectangular units create a firmer walking rhythm through gravel. Spacing, elevation and individual support affect comfort and stability.
Selected gravel completes the surface between pavers and can reduce exposed mud when installed over proper preparation with durable edge restraint.
Walkway materials and drainage construction
These PLS photographs show drainage work and walkway combinations relevant to narrow residential access areas.

Narrow-access construction sequence
Review width, gates, utilities, grade, runoff, downspouts and connection points.
Clear unsuitable material and open applicable drainage and base areas.
Install collection, pipe and connections before permanent surface work.
Prepare the structural layers and confirm planned walkway elevation.
Place pavers, install gravel, complete edging and inspect transitions.
Make everyday movement easier
The side yard is often how children reach the backyard, how pets move between spaces and how adults carry food, pool supplies, tools or equipment around the home. A drained, stable walkway reduces mud at the gate, improves footing after rain and makes the property feel connected rather than divided by an unusable strip of ground. It is a practical investment in how the entire yard functions.

Side-yard construction questions
Yes. Coordinating them is often preferable because underground pipe, basins and downspout connections can be completed before the compacted walkway base and finished pavers are installed.
No. Gravel placed directly over saturated or unstable soil can sink and migrate. The water source, grade, excavation, base and containment must be evaluated before the finish material is selected.
Each unit needs suitable subgrade preparation, a compacted support layer and careful leveling. Edge conditions and water movement also affect long-term stability.
Often, yes. Roof runoff is normally carried through solid pipe. The pipe size, alignment and discharge must be planned for the property rather than connected to an outlet that cannot handle the water.
Gate clearance is reviewed during layout. The finished elevation must allow operation while also maintaining practical transitions and drainage movement.
Yes. Low-voltage wire routes and fixture locations should be planned before the base and pavers are completed so finished work does not need to be reopened.
