The exact sequence is adjusted to the property and scope, but finished materials are protected by completing excavation, underground systems and elevation work first.

Gravel selection is only one part of a functional walkway. Excavation depth, subgrade condition, separation layer, compacted base, edge restraint and surface thickness determine whether the path stays defined and drains properly. Natural stone, concrete pavers or large stepping units can be incorporated where a firmer walking surface is preferred.
St. Augustine is commonly used in Houston area residential lawns. Zoysia and Bermuda may be appropriate depending on sunlight, appearance, traffic and maintenance expectations. Sod is a perishable living material, so establishment depends on correct watering, weather, soil conditions and homeowner care after installation.
A drain must collect water at the correct elevation and move it to a responsible outlet. Pipe type, slope, inlet placement, cleanout access and restoration are selected around the actual property. French drains are not automatically the right solution for every wet area.
