Subgrade, base, edges and water movement
The visible pavers are only the upper layer of the installation
After excavation, the exposed subgrade is evaluated and prepared before the selected base is installed. Compacted decomposed granite may be appropriate for certain stepping-paver and gravel assemblies, while interlocking or traffic-bearing systems may require a different compacted aggregate and setting layer. Edge restraint contains the field. Finished pitch must also coordinate with doors, foundation clearance, lawn grade, downspouts and any applicable collection route.

Can an existing patio be expanded with pavers?
Often, yes. The existing patio elevation, condition, drainage and edge must be evaluated so the extension can meet it cleanly without trapping runoff or creating an unsafe transition.
What keeps pavers from settling or spreading?
Performance depends on the complete assembly, including suitable subgrade, appropriate excavation, compacted base, bedding, joint material and edge restraint. Soil and intended use affect the required method.
Can drainage be installed with a new patio?
Yes. If surface pitch alone cannot move water responsibly, the project may include channel drains, catch basins, downspout connections or solid conveyance pipe installed before the base is completed.
Can decorative gravel be used between large walkway pavers?
Yes. The gravel field still requires preparation and containment. Paver spacing, walking comfort, base support, weed management expectations and surrounding elevations should be planned together.
Will irrigation lines be affected by excavation?
Existing irrigation should be located and considered during layout. Heads or lines within the construction area may require relocation or repair before final hardscape and restoration.
