Replacing the grass without evaluating the underlying condition can reproduce the same failure. Sunlight, irrigation, drainage, soil and grade should be considered before selecting the preparation method.

Sod Selection

Sod selection does not correct poor drainage, compacted soil or
irrigation deficiencies. Those conditions should be addressed before
the final turf is installed.
St. Augustine
A common Houston lawn choice with a dense broad-blade appearance and better partial-shade tolerance than Bermuda, depending on variety and actual site conditions.

The first weeks determine establishment
New sod is living material and requires immediate watering, dependable irrigation coverage and controlled use while the roots begin attaching to the prepared soil.
Begin watering immediately
Do not allow freshly installed sod or the supporting soil to dry
before the first complete watering cycle.
Verify complete coverage
Inspect corners, narrow strips and areas beside concrete where
irrigation coverage is frequently restricted.
Limit foot and pet traffic
Repeated use can separate seams, create depressions and interfere
with early root development.
Delay the first mowing
Wait until the sod has begun rooting and the soil is firm enough
to support the mower without creating ruts.
Sod is a perishable living material. Establishment depends on irrigation,
weather, sunlight, soil conditions, maintenance, insects, disease, pets
and other conditions outside the installer’s control. Sod is not
warrantied after installation.

Does all existing grass need to be removed?
Complete lawn replacement normally requires removal of the existing grass, weeds, roots and loose organic material. The amount of excavation depends on the lawn condition and required elevation correction.
Is leveling included with sod installation?
The required preparation is defined in the project scope. Minor surface smoothing and detailed finish grading differ from extensive leveling, soil import or drainage correction.
Can new sod correct standing water?
No. Sod follows the surface underneath it. Existing drainage problems should be corrected through grading, drainage construction or a coordinated combination before the new lawn is installed.
Which sod is best for shaded yards?
St. Augustine and selected Zoysia varieties generally tolerate more shade than Bermuda, but no turf performs well without adequate light. Actual sun exposure should be evaluated before selection.
Will sprinkler heads need adjustment?
They may. Removing the old lawn and changing the finished grade can leave heads too high or too low. Heads should be inspected and adjusted before or during installation.
