Water at the garage threshold
Runoff moves toward the structure because the driveway, apron or surrounding grade lacks an effective interception point.
Control runoff before it reaches the garage
Water flowing down a driveway can collect at the garage, cross the family’s walking route or remain trapped beside the concrete. That repeated condition is frustrating when everyone is carrying groceries, children are moving between the car and front door, or standing water keeps returning after storms. PLS Landscaping evaluates driveway slope, low points, runoff volume, adjacent grades and the available discharge route before recommending channel drains, catch basins or solid conveyance. Each component must collect water at the correct elevation and move it toward a responsible outlet without creating a new problem elsewhere.
Start with elevations and outlet
We review where runoff begins, where it crosses the property and where it can be conveyed.

The visible puddle may be only the collection point. The cause can begin farther uphill, at a roof discharge, along a side property grade or where two hard surfaces direct runoff toward the same low area.
Runoff moves toward the structure because the driveway, apron or surrounding grade lacks an effective interception point.
Localized settlement or a broad low area can hold water where family members step out of the car.
Water travels over a frequently used route, making the trip between the house, vehicles and yard less comfortable after rain.
Concentrated flow leaves the paving, cuts through nearby soil or mulch and carries material toward another part of the property.
Collection and conveyance
A channel drain and a catch basin perform different collection jobs. Either system still needs a properly planned route after water enters it.
A channel or trench drain can intercept sheet flow across a driveway, garage approach, patio transition or other paved route. Grate type, channel body, support and installation detail must suit the location. Areas exposed to vehicle traffic require components and construction appropriate for that use.
A catch basin collects water at a concentrated low point beside paving, within lawn or near a downspout route. The grate elevation must match the finished surface so water can enter rather than remain trapped nearby.
Solid pipe carries collected runoff away from the inlet. Pipe size, slope, fittings, burial depth, cleanout access and outlet conditions are coordinated with existing utilities, irrigation and the available grade.
A drainage system is incomplete without an achievable outlet. The termination must be evaluated for elevation, erosion, neighboring property and applicable local requirements. A pump may be considered only when gravity flow is not practical and site conditions support it.
How the system is planned
Measure the low point and confirm how water approaches it. Select a linear channel or point basin according to the flow pattern, surrounding material and traffic conditions.
Review utilities, irrigation, roots, pavement and the available fall. Excavate, set the system to the planned elevation, connect solid conveyance and provide applicable access for future cleaning.
Complete the termination, stabilize disturbed areas and test applicable flow. The surrounding surface is restored so the inlet remains accessible and set at the correct finished elevation.
Driveway drainage components and construction
These photographs show linear channel drains, an open driveway construction area and a grated surface inlet. Each component depends on elevation, support and connection to the rest of the drainage route.

A more comfortable arrival home
Driveway drainage is structural work, but the benefit is experienced through ordinary routines. A properly placed collection system can reduce recurring water across the route used by children, parents and visitors, make vehicle access less frustrating after rain and help protect restored lawn or planting areas beside the concrete. The design must still be based on actual grade and discharge conditions.

Driveway drainage questions
No. A channel drain is useful where water crosses a broad paved route. A catch basin, grade correction, downspout connection or another collection method may be more appropriate for a concentrated low point.
Only when the channel, grate, support and surrounding construction are selected and installed for the expected traffic. A pedestrian product should not be assumed suitable for a driveway.
The system needs an approved or responsible discharge route that works with available elevation. The outlet is property specific and should not create erosion or direct water onto a neighboring property.
Sometimes. The collection point, concrete condition, edge support, access and pipe route determine whether installation can be completed beside the paving or requires controlled cutting and restoration.
Pricing depends on inlet type and length, excavation, concrete work, pipe route, fittings, access, disposal, outlet construction and restoration. An onsite evaluation is required to establish the applicable scope.
