Questions Before Construction
The site evaluation determines the necessary preparation, drainage, connections, finish, and restoration scope.
Should drainage be installed before a new patio?
Any drainpipe, inlets, sleeves, downspout routes, or channel-drain connections within the construction area should be planned before concrete placement. The slab slope and final discharge route must also be coordinated.
Can a concrete patio extension block yard drainage?
Yes. An extension can cross an existing surface-flow path or create a new low area along the slab edge. Existing and proposed elevations should be reviewed before the extension dimensions are finalized.
Why is grading necessary before concrete installation?
Grading establishes the excavation depth, support elevation, slab slope, foundation clearance, and transitions to the lawn or existing hardscape. It also identifies where runoff will travel after construction.
Can irrigation lines be protected or adjusted during the project?
Existing heads, valves, and pipe routes should be identified before excavation. Components within the construction footprint may need relocation, sleeving, capping, or adjustment as defined in the proposal.
Will the lawn and planting around the concrete be restored?
Restoration can be included. The proposal should identify grading, soil, sod, gravel, borders, planting, irrigation adjustments, and cleanup so the expected finish is clear before construction begins.
Can concrete be connected to an existing slab?
It may be possible, but the existing slab elevation, condition, thickness, movement, reinforcement, edge detail, drainage direction, and intended use must be evaluated before defining the connection.
